Upgrade EM3ev vers. Mac , 500/1000W Pick'n'Mix Kit

Our Mac Kit includes: Mac motor in a built Alex wheel of your choice; Programmable Infineon Controller of your choice with matching throttle (inludes 3 speed and cruise), bar mounted power switch and ebrakes only. Interconnections between the Motor, controller and accessories are plug and play. Connection to battery are bare wire unless otherwise requested.

For detailed information on the Mac Motor please refer to the Mac Bare Motor listing. Rear Mac motor allows 7 speed freewheel and disk brake whilst staying within the standard 135mm axle width, a small spacer can be added to allow 8 or 9 speed freewheel to be fitted, but dropout width will be more approx 138-139mm. See an image of the Motor Outline in “Additional Images”. There is now a front version of the 500/1000W Mac which is disc brake compatible and fits within the standard 100mm fork dropout. Note there is approximately 15mm of space available for disc brake calipers on all disc brake compatible versions of the Mac motor.

The Mac motor is available in a wide range of motor windings to meet your requirements, ranging from approx 200rpm loaded at 36V to 320rpm loaded at 36V. Dyno data can be viewed in Additional Images. See below for expected speeds at 36V and 48V for the available motor windings. There is also an upgraded version of the Mac available, see the EM3ev version for more info. There is a choice of quality Alex wheel rims available, either the DH19 or the wider DM24 (CNC for rim or disc brakes or the all black DM24 disc for disc brakes only) complete with black stainless steel 13G spokes (download details of our rims here: http://sdrv.ms/Tyg2Rb and also see www.alexrims.com website for more info). Wheels are built to a good standard, properly tensioned, trued and dished as required. There is a choice of controller all based on what is commonly referred to as the EB3xx Infineon Controller (latest and in our opinion the best Infineon to date) fitted with either IRFB3077 (100% genuine, the best TO-220 75V fets available, suitable for up to 48V battery pack, 60V Max Supply Voltage) or IRFB4110 (100% genuine, the best TO-220 100V fets, for up to 72V battery pack, 90V Max Supply Voltage).

Kits comes complete with a choice of full or half twist throttle with integrated 3-speed and cruise. There is also the option for thumb throttle, but the latter requires a separate 3 speed switch and adds some cost to the kit price. Standard mechanical Ebrakes are also included in the standard kit. Ebrakes are a must have with a cruise equipped controller to avoid issue in unexpected situations. In addition to these parts is a handlebar mounted power switch with an additional spare momentary push button which can be used for ebrakes or even a horn, as is required. Some form of Torque Arm or Torque plate is recommended for Mac kits operating on higher power levels and we are happy to now offer the Grin Tech Front and Rear Universal Torque Arms and accessories.

Controller choices are 6 fet 25A, 9 fet 30A and 12 fet 40A in both 36-48V and 36-72V versions.  The controllers are fully programmable with the addition of the EB3xx program cable, programming software will be supplied via email. The motor is fitted with the new and much improved composite gears. The new gear design offers around 20% wider gears than the previous model and the comparable motors from BMC and Ezee, yet is still backward compatible with the existing Mac motors.

With regards to motor and controller selection, it is recommended that the motor rpm at the intended supply voltage should be within reasonable limits. The motor cannot reasonably deliver much in excess of 50km/h (31mph) for extended periods, but is capable of pushing to over 60km/h (37mph) for bursts. High Speeds of 60km/h plus require a considerable amount of continuous power and the Mac simply cannot provide it for more than bursts before motor temperatures become excessive. An excessively fast motor, controller and battery combination will not provide as good torque or operate as efficiently as a suitably matched combination with a more modest Max speed. An overly fast combination also puts more stress on both Motor and Controller and risks damage to both. On top of this, whilst high speeds are fun, it requires significantly more energy to cover similar distances than it would if a more modest speed was maintained in the 25-40km/h range (15-25mph). Mac motors are able to sustain continuous power levels of a little over 1000W with Max Power levels in the region of 1500-2000W if used reasonably. When using high voltage controllers, current levels should be reduced to bring power levels within reasonable limits. Some suggestions for suitable Mac 500/1000W Motor and IRFB3077 EB3xx Controller combinations:

  • 6 fet; 12T - OK, 10T - OK, 8T - OK but consider the 9 fet.
  • 9 fet; 12T - OK, 10T - OK, 8T - OK.
  • 12 fet; 12T – OK but can be very hard on gears and clutch, 10T – OK but can be very hard on gears and clutch, 8T – OK but has the potential to overheat the motor on steep long inclines.

Using the Mac motor at voltage much over 48V is generally unnecessary, but if you do wish to do so, I would recommend using 1 of the slower Motor windings and you will need an IRFB4110 Controller. Pick a motor that will meet the required max speed on the planned voltage and wheel size. Using a high speed motor on high voltage in a 26 or 700C wheel is not a good combination and will be very hard on the motor controller. I would recommend that the Max Power is kept to reasonable levels by reducing Battery and Phase Current levels in software, rather than using a 6 fet IRFB4110 on 72V for example. Such a combination would be quite hard on the controller. It would instead be wiser to use a controller with more fets but de-rated via Software Programming.

The following are fairly conservative estimates of what speeds you might expect with the various windings with a 36V battery pack (12S A123 liFePO4) in a 26" wheel assuming a sufficiently powerful controller and battery combination are used:

  • 12T - 25km/h (15mph). 10T - 32km/h (20mph), 8T - 39km/h (24mph).
  • At 48V expect the following, 12T - 34km/h (21mph). 10T - 40km/h (25mph), 8T - 48km/h (31mph).

Below are the outline drawings for both front and rear Mac motors. Please note the limited space (approx 15mm) for disc brake caliper and also the small space between the non-disc side of the front motor to the dropout. Please ensure they motor is compatible before you purchase.

There are a few additional items that may interest you on the Mac kits, as listed below:

  • EB3XX Infineon Controller Programming cable. All Infineon EB3xx controllers supplied with Mac kits are programmable with this cable.
  • Throttles are cheap; our throttles are plug-and-play with the Infineon controller we supply, shipping on small parcels can be quite expensive. A spare throttle may save some inconvenience and cost at a later date.
  • Spare gears (30USD) or clutch (25USD). The high power controllers and also the high turn, high torque motors can be hard on the gear system. Having a spare at hand will avoid any down time if something fails.
  • DNP 11T 7 Speed, 8 Speed and 9 speed are available. 7S is a direct fit to the Mac rear, 8 and 9 speed require a 3-4mm spacer be added for clearance.
  • CA-DPS, the latest correct type for a geared hub motor, see http://www.ebike.ca/drainbrain.shtml for more info.

  • Ebike tester – 20USD. The Ebike Tester enables hall and phase signals to be checked. It’s a very useful additional to your tool box.
  • DCDC (component only), 3A OP, adjustable DC out, max 48V pack– 10USD. To run any low voltage parts from your battery pack such as lights.
  • PAS Display and Sensor. The PAS display gives a battery level LED indication and allows the PAS function to be adjusted for various assist levels. It also includes a 6km/h push button function. PAS comes complete with loom for direct fitment to the Infineon Controller. Display can be used with or without throttle. Intended for 36V packs only but can be modified for higher voltage if required. The PAS display allows much more control of the PAS function than is available with the PAS directly connected to the Controller.

Note: the available space for the disk is a little limited at 15mm between the side casing and the inner face of the disk, so some care when selecting a suitable caliper is required or some spacing of the disk away from the side cover and possibly modification of the caliper mounting may be required for some models of disk brake caliper.
